The Chasm Between Business and Design


It has been my experience that most companies are barely scratching the surface of what design can deliver to their bottom line. Corporations that understand how to leverage design, on the other hand, create huge sustainable progress. Many companies see design as an expensive, however necessary, evil. This could not be further from the truth. The design-leader Apple, for example, invests about three percent of its revenue in design. Although this is roughly the same amount of investment in design as its competitors, it is a very good investment.

What is “Design Thinking?


Design Thinking has been around at least since the early seventies, and still a majority of designers’ seems to wonders what it is. Is it old wine on new bottles or a new California thing? The next weeks we will examine what literature, various institutions, experts and practicing designer have to say.

Designers’ power in organizations


“The Prince”, by Machiavelli, has been the definitive textbook on power for the last 500 years. Last year Jeff Pfeffer wrote “Power”, the definitive book on the subject for our generation. Apart from maybe torture and killing, not much has changed. However it is definitely more readable and has many more contemporary cases. How are designers doing in these 21st Century games of corporate power and what is the outlook for their future?
